Savanna was our first in so many ways. Our first home bred champion, our first tracking dog, our first Master Hunter, our first Hall of Fame dog. She was the smartest dog I’ve ever known, and I hope I never know one that smart again! She was the quintessential trickster, with a devilish sense of humor. Her great problem solving abilities made her a natural for tracking, but also helped her become the world’s greatest food thief. She could figure a way to bypass every pantry latch invented. She just loved a challenge.
Savanna was also a lively sociable girl who loved to be in the center of things. She was quite a talker and lived up to the Songdog name. She was a most gracious party host and loved to make company feel welcome by sleeping with them. Savanna also loved kids, and would retrieve for them until she was ready to drop!
She was most dazzling, however, in the field. Her drive was incredible and her marking superb. She took to hunt tests like a duck to water, and did a grand job, despite our early training mistakes. We learned much about field training from Savanna and we have to credit today’s success to her past.
In her later years Savanna became Brian’s duck hunting dog. She was happiest to rise early and head for the teal pond, to hide among the cattails and wait for the action to start. It was true quality time with Dad. Then she loved to come home, climb into Kate’s lap, get some chest scratches, and take a nap. That was true quality time - for both of them.
